Erectile Dysfunction

What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a type of sexual problem in men that causes difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection that is firm enough for sexual intercourse. It commonly occurs with older age.

If you suffer from ED, you don’t have to live with it. Simple solutions are within reach at Aloha Urology.

What are the symptoms of ED?

If you have ED, you might experience the following symptoms:

  • Difficulty keeping an erection
  • Problems getting an erection
  • Reduced sexual desire

Erectile dysfunction can be embarrassing and is sometimes a sign of a serious health problem. Check in with your doctor to rule out an underlying medical condition, as ED is associated with clogged blood vessels, diabetic nerve damage, and other health concerns.

What causes ED?

Erectile dysfunction commonly occurs with increased age, but anybody can suffer from it. Factors that increase your risk of developing ED include:

  • Stress, depression, and anxiety
  • Drug or alcohol use
  • Older age
  • Diabetes, heart disease, or clogged blood vessels
  • High blood pressure and high cholesterol
  • Being overweight or obese
  • Nerve damage
  • Taking certain medications
  • Pelvic or spinal cord surgeries
  • Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis

Treatments for enlarged prostate or cancer can also cause ED in men. See your doctor if you suffer from erectile dysfunction to determine its cause.

What is the treatment for ED?

After reviewing your medical history and completing an exam, your urologist lets you know which ED treatment best matches your needs. He might recommend:

Lifestyle changes

Certain lifestyle changes eliminate ED without the need for further treatment. Examples include weight loss, regular exercise, not smoking, stress reduction, and treatment for diabetes, heart disease, depression, and other chronic health conditions.

Medications

Oral medications can increase nitric oxide, a natural substance found within your body, and boost blood flow to enhance erections after sexual stimulation. Other types of medications, such as injections and suppositories, can often produce erections.

Hormone replacement therapy

Low testosterone associated with age might be the cause of your ED. If your testosterone levels are low, your urologist may recommend testosterone replacement therapy to restore your sex life.

Penis pumps or implants

If other ED treatment options haven’t worked, ask your doctor if penis pumps or implants are right for you. Penile implants involve surgery, and penis pumps are battery- or hand-powered devices that help produce erections.
