What is prostate cancer?

Prostate cancer is a cancer in your prostate gland, which is a walnut-shaped gland that produces fluid that transports sperm. When caught early, prostate cancer is highly treatable.

However, if the cancer spreads to other areas, treatment is more complex. The urologists at Aloha Urology have decades of experience treating prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer commonly occurs in men over age 65, African American men, and those with a family history of prostate cancer. Being obese also increases your risk.

What are the symptoms of prostate cancer?

In its early stages, prostate cancer might have no signs or symptoms. That’s why regular screenings with a urologist are so important. Over time, however, you might experience:

  • A decrease in urine force
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Pelvic pain
  • Blood in semen
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Bone pain
  • Low back pain
  • Problems passing urine
  • Pain with ejaculation

Regular prostate cancer screenings help detect the disease before symptoms and serious complications arise. Prostate cancer spreads slowly or quickly, depending on the type you have.

How is prostate cancer diagnosed?

Your urologist uses various methods to screen for and diagnose prostate cancer. He might complete a digital rectal exam to check your prostate for lumps or other abnormalities or use blood tests to screen for cancer.

If these tests show abnormalities, your urologist completes a biopsy or imaging test, such as an MRI or ultrasound.

What is the treatment for prostate cancer?

If you have prostate cancer, treatment is based on how severe the cancer is. Your urologist might recommend:

Surgery

The urologists at Aloha Urology specialize in innovative robotic surgery and use this method to remove your prostate and surrounding tissue whenever necessary. Your surgeon uses hand controls to guide a robot during surgery.

Radiation therapy

Radiation therapy uses radiation energy to kill prostate cancer cells. Your doctor lets you know what to expect during radiation therapy and the possible side effects associated with it.

Hormone therapy

Hormone therapy helps prevent your body from producing testosterone, causing prostate cancer cells to die off. You might take medications or have surgery to remove your testicles to decrease testosterone production.

Cryoablation

During cryoablation, or cryosurgery, your urologist freezes prostate cancer cells using tiny needles.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy uses intravenous or oral medications to kill prostate cancer cells. This might be a good option if cancer hasn’t responded to hormone therapy.

Biological therapy

Immunotherapy, or biological therapy, uses your own immune cells to treat cancer. Your provider genetically engineers the cells and injects them back into your body to fight prostate cancer.

The experienced urologists at Aloha Urology let you know which prostate cancer treatment best matches your needs.
